- What can I expect at an audit?
- At a home energy audit an auditor will use a variety of techniques to get a good picture of how your home performs in terms of energy. The auditor will use a blower door test to pressurize your home, then, with other tools he or she will determine if your home leaks air. There will be an overarching visual inspection of all your home's systems and large appliances. The auditor will measure your levels of insullation using infared cameras to look into the walls. Finally, sophisitcated software is used to analyze all of these variables and determine how efficiently your home is using energy. The auditing process takes 3-4 hours on average, and at the end an auditor will be able to provide you with suggestions on how to improve your home's energy consumption.
- What is a HERS rating?
- Once an auditor has completed an energy audit on your home, he may assign a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) number. Think of it like a MPG rating for your car. It is a measure of your home's energy efficiency. This number is often considered in your eligibility for your government incentive programs and rebates.
- What is HERO?
- HERO is the Louisiana Department of Natural Resource's Home Energy Rebate Option Program (HERO). It provides a cash rebate of up to $2,000 to homeowners who increase the energy efficiency of their current home by a minimum of 30%. Visit their site for additional information:
